People 100: The people who make Brighton and Hove what it is

People100WebImageIn a city of nearly 300,000 people, it is impossible to compile a definitive list of 100 individuals who are most influential in making Brighton and Hove what it is.

The people highlighted in this week’s Brighton & Hove Independent’s People 100 supplement – the first of its kind – are not, by any means, the most powerful. They are not necessarily even the most influential. Many are certainly not famous.

They do, however, have one thing in common: they – and their associated organisations – play a significant part in shaping the city in which we all live.

Of course, there are countless others who play their part. (In truth, it is hoped that we all play a part – however small and mundane; newspaper editors, for example, are excluded.)

Far from scientific, our aim is to celebrate – and hold to account, to some degree – the men and women (70 men, 30 women – as it turned out) who make an impact, for good or ill, on the quality of our daily lives.

People 100 features leading figures in the arts (six men, two women); business (24 men, eight women); community (five men, two women); digital (two men); education (four men, one woman); food and drink (two men); health (one man, three women); law (one woman); media (three men, three women); music (one man, one woman); politics (six men, one woman); public service (nine men, five women); sport (three men); third sector (two men, three women); and trades unions (two men).

Entries are listed alphabetically, by surname.

Almost every aspect of this week’s People 100 supplement will be controversial. We hope some of the entries will cause surprise; more will inform and entertain; some will provoke.

It is usual, with exercises of this kind, to issue some health warnings. So here goes.

The exercise began as an attempt to identify the many hundreds – even thousands – of people who made distinctive contributions to life in our city. From the besuited businesswoman in her city-centre office, to the voluntary worker making an impact in his local community; from the chief executive, to the school-crossing supervisor.

It quickly became clear the resources required to undertake such an exercise were beyond those that Brighton & Hove Independent could bring to bear. We decided to limit our ambitions to producing a list of, say, 500 people. Indeed, in preparation for this supplement, we have gone a long way towards compiling such a list.

But compiling a longer list made the exercise only more problematic. Specifically, who to include and who to leave out? And how could we squeeze in so many people in a printed newspaper?

This publication is only a starting point. In the coming weeks I hope you will suggest additions – and deletions. We will try to reflect this “crowd-sourced” expansion of the People 100.

We have done our best to canvass opinions – albeit informally – from various leading figures in Brighton and Hove; we have also appealed for nominations via social media.

But the responsiblity for the final selection is mine.

I expect – and even hope – that almost everybody will disagree with it. But perhaps it will encourage a greater awareness that it is we – the citizens – who make the city. Our city.

“If one meets a powerful person, ask them five questions: ‘What power have you got? Where did you get it from? In whose interests do you exercise it? To whom are you accountable? And how can we get rid of you?’

“If you cannot get rid of the people who govern you, you do not live in a democratic system.”
